Research Interests:
Dr. van Leeuwen's research is mainly on ethanol production and purification and focuses on improved yield, better byproduct utilization, and water reuse in ethanol from corn production using fungal processes.  He also studies brown rot fungal process utilization to convert lignocellulosic material into sugars and ethanol and researches purification of ethanol with ozonation and activated carbon to make food-grade alcohol. Lastly he is involved in research on ships' ballast water disinfestation using ozonation and ultrasound.
