Annual Iowa Organic Conference
The 9th Annual Iowa Organic Conference will convene on 5 December 2009 in the Scheman Building of the ISU Center. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Jerry DeWitt, director of the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture. The program also includes a trade show. Details are available at 2009 Conference. 
GPSA Alum Publishes Food Safety Book
Greg Bennet, 2008 PhD graduate of the GPSA, has published "Food Identity Preservation and Traceability: Safer Grains." The book grew out of Bennet's research conducted while a GPSA student. Publication details are available at CRC Press.
GPSA Students Awarded Fulbright Grants
GPSA major Elise Regen and GPSA co-major Laura Christianson have been awarded US Student Fulbright Grants to support their research projects in Egypt and New Zealand respec-tively. Both are pursuing the PhD degree. For details, please see Fulbright news release.

The GPSA was the first and remains the only graduate program in the US to offer both the MS
and PhD degrees in sustainable agriculture. While competing pro-grams have arisen in agroecology and
organic agriculture, the GPSA remains the only grad program that allows students to
pursue a true interdisciplinary curriculum that includes the biological, social, and economic elements of
sustainability.
The OEC selected the GPSA as one of the top eight programs in
the US. Of the eight leading institutions named, only Ohio State, UC-Davis, and
UW-Madison offer graduate programs
comparable to the GPSA (in agroecology or environmental science), but Iowa State alone maintains its primary
focus on sustainable agriculture as a distinct and separate discipline.
